Program Description

Office Procedures, Bookkeeping, Sage and Quickbooks Computerized Accounting, Corporate and Financial Accounting, and Payroll Administration


The Accounting and Payroll program gives students a basic understanding of office procedures, bookkeeping, Sage and Quickbooks computerized accounting, corporate and financial accounting, and payroll administration.  This program is recognized by the National Payroll Institute, and the curriculum meets the academic requirement needed to challenge the exam for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation. 

  • Be introduced to facets of corporate accounting, including corporate financial statements preparation and analysis, cash flow analysis and reporting, capital assets and liabilities
  • Develop an understanding of basic financial accounting principles and practices according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Learn bookkeeping basics and how to perform day-to-day financial transactions, including general journal entries, accounts payable and receivables and the operation of petty cash
  • Learn payroll-related legislation and payroll fundamentals (National Payroll Institute curriculum)
  • Transition the concepts of manual bookkeeping to a computerized accounting environment (Sage and Quickbooks will be covered)
  • Gain basic knowledge of office procedures and develop professional business skills necessary to communicate in a dynamic workplace
  • Learn to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Students must meet a 65% passing grade for NPI courses to be eligible to challenge the exam for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation.

Admission Requirements

Standard:

  1. Alberta high school diploma / non-Alberta equivalent / GED – English proficiency – CLB 6, IELTS (academic module) 5 – Keyboarding (15 wpm, no errors) – Clear security clearance – Ability to carry out the workload – Interview with Program Coordinator 

Alberta Mature Admission:

  1. The student must be 18 years of age; must complete an academic achievement test ie. Wonderlic with a score of 20 at minimum.
  2. All students must complete a successful interview with the College Program Chair or Administrative Manager.
  3. If ESL, the student must meet CLB level 6.0 or IELTS equivalent.
  4. Candidates must produce evidence of English ability or complete the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) with a minimum of 60 % in each of the verbal and quantitative skills.
  5. International students must supply transcripts that are equivalent to the standard admission requirements or complete the WBST.

B.C. Mature Admission

  1. The student has graduated from grade 12 or equivalent (B.C. high school diploma, B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma, General Educational Development) or an equivalent secondary school completion from another jurisdiction.
  2. The student is 19 years of age or older before the start of classes and has demonstrated evidence at the appropriate level of literacy, numeracy, comprehension and/or written skills to enable successful completion of the program.
